Lady Amity Savernake - Amy - neglected, rather plain, and youngest daughter of the Earl of Osmington, was seven years old when her stepmother (disparagingly referred to within the family as Soapy Sonia) took her to London, bought her a fitted vicuna coat with a velvet collar, and introduced her (at the Ritz) to Rudi Longmire, the genie who was to change their lives.
It was Rudi's idea that there should be a midsummer Festival of the Arts at Gunville Place. The ugly Dorset pile, seat of the Savernakes, would be transformed into a pastoral paradise; singers, actors, musicians and exotic visitors - as well as the family - would bring enchantment into their world. As Rudi, Master of Revels and Lord of Misrule, drew each and every one of them into his exptic plans, so excitement spilled out into the countryside. A dead may tree threw out leaves and blossomed. The local white witch absentmindedly gave her pig a love potion, and two village maidens were accosted in the woods by a genuine Dorset Ooser.
And within the family it seemed the enchantment would solve their various discontents: Soapy Sonia, Grandmother Mottesfont, even Claudia, Amy's corrosive and rebellious sister, bloomed in the midsummer revels. And young Amy watched and listened and for a brief childhood span was given the magic of complete happiness - a happiness she never forgot - not even in the disruptive aftermath of that heady summer, or in the years that followed. - from the wraps.
A lovely story reflecting the changing circumstances of the upper class in England between the wars. Although Amy is an adult sharing her memories with the reader, she does so in a way that wonderfully preserves her viewpoint as a child. A delightful story.Book Price: $6.00
